Neck Pain

Pain in the neck area can be from many causes, and they often co-exist. A common cause of neck pain involves “whiplash” or pain due to a motor vehicle accident. This pain is primarily concentrated in the muscles but it can also affect facet joints and discs.

If your neck pain also involves your arms, if you’re feeling numbness and/or weakness, a nerve root may be involved.

If you feel pain when you move your neck, this could indicate facet joint pain. If you feel pain when you are touched, this is suggestive of muscular pain. Pain that radiates up the back of your head might indicate facet joint pain or an irritation of the occipital nerves.

An exam and possible imaging can clarify the cause of your neck pain.
