Conditions Treated

Disc Herniation

When the soft discs of the spine are injured, you may have a disc herniation or disc bulge.

The discs of your spine are normally soft and well contained. When they are damaged or exposed to excessive pressure, the discs can tear, leak, bulge, or extrude disc material. All of these conditions are painful to varying degrees.

A minor herniation can cause transient pain that can get better with mild pain relievers, rest, and physical therapy. A more severe herniation can cause nerve damage that results in weakness or numbness. Depending on the level of injury, you may be referred to a surgeon for repair.

Not all herniations are painful. An RCIPS specialist can determine the best course of treatment for you. The doctor may ask you a series of questions, perform a physical examination, order imaging studies, and perform diagnostic injections.
