Dr. Steven Abney

Dr. AbneyDr. Steven Abney was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana and graduated from Captain Shreve High School. He attended Louisiana State University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree, and the American School of Professional Psychology in Washington, D.C., where he earned a master's degree, as well as his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Abney completed his pre-doctoral internship with the Mid-Atlantic Internship Consortium in Washington, D.C., and three years of postdoctoral training in Maryland and Louisiana. He is licensed as a Clinical Psychologist in Louisiana and Virginia.

Dr. Abney treats depressive and anxiety disorders, helps clients overcome addiction, cope with pain and deal with the stress and anxiety associated with illness or injury. He often uses mindfulness-based psychotherapeutic approaches. His training in integrative psychotherapeutic techniques, as well as his clinical experience with a wide array of psychological disorders in diverse settings, enables him to tailor treatment plans to the needs of his clients rather than utilizing a “one size fits all” approach. His philosophy of treatment is collaborative, based upon the belief that in therapy, the client is the expert regarding his or her own experience. Dr. Abney also utilizes a holistic approach to mental health treatment which takes all aspects of the client's life into account – from diet and lifestyle to spirituality and interpersonal functioning.

Dr. Abney is excited to be back in the Shreveport-Bossier area, and to be working with the staff and patients of River Cities Interventional Pain Specialists. He lives in Shreveport with his wife and three children, and in his spare time enjoys running, martial arts, and spending time with his family.
